Quantitative description of Josephson-like tunneling in νT = 1 quantum Hall bilayers

چکیده
At total filling factor νT = 1, interlayer phase coherence in quantum Hall bilayers can result in a tunneling anomaly resembling the Josephson effect in the presence of strong fluctuations. The most robust experimental signature of this effect is a strong enhancement of the tunneling conductance at small voltages. The height and width of the conductance peak depend strongly on the area and tunneling amplitude of the samples, applied parallel magnetic field, and temperature. We find that the tunneling experiments are in quantitative agreement with a theory that treats fluctuations due to meron excitations phenomenologically and takes tunneling into account perturbatively. We also discuss the qualitative changes caused by larger tunneling amplitudes, and provide a possible explanation for recently observed critical currents in counterflow geometry.

Tunneling at νT = 1 in quantum Hall bilayers
Interlayer tunneling measurements in the strongly correlated bilayer quantized Hall phase at νT = 1 are reported. The maximum, or critical, current for tunneling at νT = 1 is shown to be a well-defined global property of the coherent phase, insensitive to extrinsic circuit effects and the precise configuration used to measure it, but also exhibiting a surprising scaling behavior with temperatur...
متن کاملSuperfluidity and Superconductivity in Double-Layered Quantum Hall state
We discuss and review the basic physics that leads to superfluidity/superconductivity in certain quantum Hall states, in particular the so-called double-layered (mmm) state. In the K-matrix description of the quantum correlation in quantum Hall states, those states with det(K) = 0 contain a special correlation that leads to superfluidity/superconductivity. We propose a four-terminal measurement...
متن کاملJosephson effect without superconductivity: realization in quantum Hall bilayers.
We show that a quantum Hall bilayer with the total filling nu = 1 should exhibit a dynamical regime similar to the flux flow in large Josephson junctions. This analogy may explain a conspicuous peak in the interlayer tunneling conductance [Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5808 (2000)]. The flux flow is likely to be spatiotemporally chaotic at low-bias voltage, which will manifest itself through broadband n...
متن کاملDc Transformer and Dc Josephson(-like) Effects in Quantum Hall Bilayers
In the early days of superconductivity, Ivar Giaver discovered that it was possible to make a novel DC transformer by using one superconductor to drag vortices through another. An analogous effect was predicted to exist in quantum Hall bilayers and has recently been discovered experimentally by Eisenstein’s group at Caltech. Similarly, new experiments from the Caltech group have demonstrated th...

The recent report on the observation of soft magnetorotons in the dispersion of charge-density excitations across the tunneling gap in coupled bilayers at total Landau level filling factor νT = 1 is reviewed. The inelastic light scattering experiments take advantage of the breakdown of wave-vector conservation that occurs under resonant excitation. The results offer evidence that in the quantum...
